Description:
A small, short-necked wader with crouched carriage on short legs and a shortish bill. White wing-bar and brown rump and centre of tail in flight, with distinctive rapid shallow wing beats and bowed-wing glides. In breeding plumage, has irregular dark streaking and barring on upperparts, lacking in non-breeding.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant and summer visitor to all the areas in Gilgit-Baltistan. Usually found in wide variety of wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. From lowlands up to 3500m during passage migration.
Behavior:
Prey located visually; feeds mainly by pecking and stabbing, free stalking and dashing, rarely by probing; runs quickly, frequently pausing with tail moving up and down and head bobbing. Mainly diurnal forager. Feeds on adult and larval insects, spiders, molluscs, crustaceans and annelids, sometimes frogs, tadpoles or small fish; occasionally plant material.
